FAIRFIELD – A historic Clovis Community College women's volleyball season came to a close on Saturday with a heartbreaking five-set loss at Solano College in an opening-round match of the Northern California Regional Playoffs.
The Crush, seeded 18th for the playoffs, appeared to be on their way to the postseason victory after taking a 2-1 lead in the contest. But No. 15 Solano rallied to take the last two sets and win the marathon 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-9 match.
Juliana Sanchez led the Crush offense with 17 kills to go along with 9 digs. Jordan Salinas totaled 12 kills while Lyric Garcia and Makayla Whitten both had 10 kills each. Garcia added a team-high 24 digs and Whitten contributed 8 digs with a pair of aces.
Ashley Robles closed out the year with 46 assists and 13 digs and Lily Villegas posted 19 digs, 5 kills, and 4 aces in the finale.
It was a tough ending for an otherwise impressive first season for the Crush. Head coach Mark Rosen's launch of the Crush women's volleyball program exceeded expectations as Clovis closed out the year with a winning record at 15-9 overall, a second-place finish in Central Valley Conference North Division standings with a 6-2 mark, and a Northern California Regional Playoffs appearance.
